You spent hours writing product descriptions, picking the perfect photos, and optimising your page speed. And then your add-to-cart button is sitting at the bottom of the page, below a size chart, underneath the shipping policy, waiting to be found like a Easter egg.
Where you put your CTA matters more than what it says. Here are 4 placements that make the add-to-cart button impossible to miss.
1. Sticky CTA on Mobile
This is the single highest-impact change you can make to a mobile product page.
A sticky add-to-cart bar stays fixed at the bottom of the screen as the user scrolls. It’s always visible. Always tappable. No scrolling back up. No hunting for the button.
Most Shopify themes have this built in. If yours doesn’t, there are free plugins that add it in 2 minutes. The bar should include:
- The price
- A quantity selector (optional but useful)
- The add-to-cart button
Nothing else. No “share” icon. No wishlist heart. Just the transaction.
Mobile conversion rates typically jump 15-25% with a sticky CTA. That’s not a small lift. That’s the difference between a store that works and one that doesn’t on phones.
2. Dual CTA Above and Below the Fold
On desktop, the standard layout puts the add-to-cart button above the fold, next to the product image. That’s good. But it means once someone scrolls down to read reviews, see more photos, or check the size guide, they’ve lost the button.
The fix: add a second CTA below the fold, right after the key decision-making content. This is usually after the product details and before the reviews section.
This isn’t redundant. It’s meeting the customer where their decision happens. Some people decide the moment they see the price. Others need to read the details first. Both should be one click away from buying.
Don’t make both buttons identical. The top one can be your primary button style. The bottom one can be slightly more subtle but still clearly a CTA. Same text, same link, different visual weight.
3. CTA Next to Variant Selectors, Not Below Them
Most product pages stack everything vertically: product title, price, colour selector, size selector, quantity, then add-to-cart. By the time someone finishes choosing their options, the button is a scroll away from where they started deciding.
Instead, place the CTA immediately next to or directly below the last required selector. If colour and size are both required, the button should appear right after the size selector. No gap. No extra paragraph about shipping. The decision path should be: see, choose, click.
On mobile, this means the CTA should sit right below the last dropdown or swatch row. No whitespace. No “select options” accordion that hides the button until expanded. The button should be visible the moment the last option is selected.
4. Post-Selection CTA That Changes State
The best CTAs don’t just sit there. They respond.
When a customer first lands on the product page, the button says “Select options” or shows a greyed-out state. Once they’ve chosen their size and colour, the button activates and changes to “Add to cart.” This gives visual confirmation that they’ve made all the required choices.
Even better: when they click “Add to cart,” the button briefly changes to “Added” with a check mark, then settles into a “View cart” state. This confirms the action happened without forcing a page redirect.
Why this works: it removes ambiguity. The customer knows exactly where they are in the buying process. The button told them what to do, confirmed they did it, and offered the next step. No guesswork.
Quick Implementation Checklist
- Mobile: Add a sticky CTA bar with price and add-to-cart button
- Desktop: Add a second CTA below the fold after product details
- Both: Move CTA directly below the last required selector
- Both: Change button state from “Select options” to “Add to cart” once all choices are made
- Both: Add a brief “Added” confirmation state after clicking
None of these require a developer. Most Shopify themes and WordPress WooCommerce setups support them through theme settings or free plugins. If your theme doesn’t support sticky CTAs, it’s time to switch themes. That single change will outperform any copywriting tweak you make this year.
