Most thank-you emails are an afterthought. A subject line that says “Order confirmed.” A body that lists the order number, the shipping address, and nothing else. The customer already bought from you. They are paying attention. And you are wasting the most engaged moment in their entire journey.
The thank-you email is not a receipt. It is the first step in getting them to buy again. Here are four tweaks that turn a transactional message into a retention tool.
1. Put a Personal Product Recommendation Above the Order Summary
The customer just bought something. Their cart tells you what they like. Use it.
Instead of showing the order summary first, add a single recommendation row above it. Not “You might also like” with 12 options. One row. Three products. Based on what they actually bought.
How to do it: If you use Shopify, apps like Rebuy or LimeSpot can do this automatically. If you want to keep it simple, use your order data to create 4-5 product bundles and match them to purchase categories. Someone bought a candle? Show them the complementary scent. Someone bought a notebook? Show them the pen that goes with it.
The principle: You already have their attention and their trust. They just gave you money. That is the best moment to show them what else you have. Do not wait for them to come back. They might not.
2. Add a Referral or Share Prompt With a Specific Incentive
Right after purchase is when customers are most likely to talk about your brand. They are happy. The product has not arrived yet, so they have no complaints. This is the moment.
Add one line below the order details: “Share this with someone who would love it. You both get 15% off your next order.” Or: “Know someone who needs this? Forward this email and they get free shipping on their first order.”
How to do it: Use a referral tool like ReferralCandy or Smile.io to generate unique referral links automatically. Or keep it manual: create a discount code for referred customers and include it in the email. The key is that the incentive is specific and the ask is clear.
The principle: A generic “follow us on social” does not work because it asks for effort without reward. A specific referral offer works because it gives both people a reason to act. The customer feels smart for sharing. The friend gets a deal. You get a new customer at near-zero acquisition cost.
3. Set an Expectation for the Next Email
Most thank-you emails end with silence. The customer has no idea when they will hear from you again. So they forget about you.
Instead, end the email with a clear promise: “We will email you when your order ships, usually within 24 hours.” Or: “Next week, we will send you a quick guide on how to get the most out of your purchase.”
How to do it: If you use Shopify, shipping notifications are automatic. But go further. Create a 3-email post-purchase sequence: (1) thank you + recommendation, (2) shipping confirmation + care guide, (3) 7 days after delivery + review request or loyalty offer. Each email tells the customer what the next one will be about.
The principle: People open emails from senders they trust. The fastest way to build trust is to do what you say you will do. When you tell them exactly when they will hear from you next, you are training them to expect and open your emails. That habit is worth more than any single promotion.
4. Include a Time-Limited Reorder Discount
This one is simple and it works. Add a discount code at the bottom of the thank-you email that expires in 7-14 days. Not a generic “10% off” that sits in their inbox forever. A specific code with a deadline.
“Use WELCOME10 on your next order. Valid for 10 days.”
How to do it: Create a single-use discount in Shopify or your e-commerce platform. Set it to expire. Include it in the thank-you email template. If you use Klaviyo or another email tool, you can generate unique codes per customer automatically.
The principle: A discount without a deadline is just a price cut. A discount with a deadline is a reason to act. The customer just had a positive experience with your brand. A time-limited offer gives them a reason to come back before that feeling fades.
Put It Together
Here is what a thank-you email looks like with all four tweaks:
- Subject: Your order is confirmed + something for next time
- Top: Personal product recommendations (3 items, based on what they bought)
- Middle: Order details and shipping timeline
- Below order details: Referral prompt with a specific incentive
- Below that: “We will email you when this ships, usually within 24 hours”
- Bottom: Time-limited reorder discount code with expiry date
None of these tweaks require a custom-built email platform. They require a few template changes and a clear understanding that the thank-you email is not a receipt. It is the start of your next sale.
