What Actually Happened

On April 30, Google announced that AI Max, its AI-driven advertising platform, now covers Shopping campaigns. Previously, AI Max only handled Search and Performance Max. Now it optimises your product listings, bidding, and ad creative using Gemini models. And a new feature called AI Brief gives you a plain-English summary of your campaign performance with recommended actions.

Separately, Google Merchant Center quietly launched an AI product import beta. Instead of manually building your product feed, you point the tool at your website and it scans pages, extracts product data, and populates your Merchant Center feed automatically.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

Two things changed at once:

  1. Shopping ads got smarter. AI Max now decides which products to show, to whom, and at what bid, based on signals you cannot see or control. If your product data is messy, incomplete, or inconsistent, the AI will make bad decisions at scale. Fast.
  2. Product feeds got easier to build but harder to get right. The AI import tool is a beta and it will make mistakes. Product titles will be truncated. Attributes will be guessed. Variants will be merged. You need to audit whatever it produces before it goes live.

What You Should Do Right Now

Audit your product feed. Open your Merchant Center, export your feed, and check every field. Are your titles under 150 characters? Do your descriptions lead with the most important information? Are your GTINs correct? Are your images at least 1000×1000? If the AI is going to optimise your ads, it needs clean data to work with.

Set up AI Brief. It takes 30 seconds and it gives you a plain-English summary of what is working and what is not. You do not need to understand every metric. You just need to read the recommendations and act on the obvious ones.

Watch your Search Terms report. AI Max will match your products to queries you never thought of. Some will be great. Some will be irrelevant. Check the report weekly and add negative keywords for anything that is burning budget without converting.

Do not set it and forget it. The whole pitch of AI-powered advertising is that it runs itself. It does not. It runs better than manual bidding in most cases, but it still needs a human checking the steering wheel. Check in weekly. Adjust budgets monthly. Prune bad search terms.

The Bigger Picture

Google is moving toward a world where you describe what you want to sell and the platform figures out the rest. That world is not here yet. The AI still needs clean product data, clear images, and a human watching for mistakes. But the direction is clear: the less manual work you do on your feed, the more competitive you need to be on data quality.

The businesses that win with AI Shopping ads are not the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones with the cleanest feeds.
