What AI Can Actually Do for Your SEO

AI is not a replacement for good content. It is a replacement for the tedious, repetitive work that makes good content rank. Specifically:

  • Keyword research: Find the terms your audience is actually searching for, not the ones you think they should use.
  • Content optimization: Rewrite existing pages so they target the right keywords without sounding like a keyword dump.
  • Technical SEO: Identify broken links, missing meta descriptions, duplicate content, and slow pages.
  • Content gap analysis: Find topics your competitors rank for that you do not cover at all.

None of this requires a consultant. It requires the right prompt and 10 minutes.

How to Find Keywords That Actually Matter

Open any AI chat tool and give it this context:

I run a [type of business] selling [products or services]. My target customer is [describe them]. List 20 long-tail keywords they are likely to search for when looking to buy [product type]. Prioritise buying-intent keywords over informational ones. Include estimated monthly search volume and competition level.

The output gives you a keyword map. Not 500 random terms. Twenty terms ranked by intent.

Then take the top 5 and check them against your existing pages. If you have a page targeting that keyword, optimise it. If you do not, create one.

This is the work agencies charge $2,000 a month for. It takes 10 minutes with AI.

How to Optimise an Existing Page

Take a product page or blog post that gets traffic but does not rank well. Paste it into an AI tool with this prompt:

Here is a page I want to rank for the keyword “[target keyword]”. The current content is below. Rewrite the meta title, meta description, H1, and first 200 words to better target this keyword. Keep the existing brand voice. Do not keyword-stuff. Make it natural and specific.

Then compare the output to your original. You will usually find:

  • The AI tightens the H1 to include the target keyword naturally
  • The meta description becomes more specific and actionable
  • The opening paragraph leads with the answer instead of a vague intro
  • Internal linking suggestions appear (link this to your related page about X)

Apply the changes. One page at a time. Ten pages in a month makes a real difference.

How to Find Content Gaps Your Competitors Cover and You Do Not

This is where AI becomes a competitive advantage. Run this prompt:

Compare the following list of my top 10 pages to this list of my competitor’s top 10 pages. Identify topics they cover that I do not. For each gap, suggest a title and target keyword. Prioritise gaps that target buying-intent searches.

To get the competitor data, use a free tool like Google Search Console (for your own data) and Ahrefs free checker or Ubersuggest (for competitor data). Paste the top pages for both.

The output tells you exactly what content to write next. Not 50 ideas. The 3 to 5 that will actually move your rankings.

How to Fix Technical SEO Issues Without a Developer

AI cannot fix your website code. But it can tell you exactly what to fix and give you the code to fix it.

Run your site through a free audit tool (PageSpeed Insights, Screaming Frog free version, or Google Search Console). Export the issues. Then prompt:

Here is a list of technical SEO issues from my site audit. For each issue, explain what it means in plain language and give me the exact code or configuration change I need to make to fix it. I use [platform, e.g. Shopify, WordPress].

The output gives you:

  • Plain-language explanations for every issue
  • Specific code snippets for your platform
  • A prioritised list (fix this first, this can wait)

Most technical SEO fixes take 5 to 10 minutes each. The audit takes 30 minutes. The AI explanation takes 10 minutes. You just saved a developer call.

How to Write Content That Ranks Without Writing It All Yourself

AI should not write your entire article. But it should write the first draft, the outline, and the meta tags. Here is the workflow:

  1. Outline: Give AI your target keyword and ask for a 10-section outline with H2 headings. Each heading should answer a specific search intent.
  2. First draft: Ask AI to write each section. Review and rewrite in your voice. Cut the fluff. Add your own experience.
  3. Meta tags: Ask AI to write 5 title tag options and 3 meta description options for the keyword. Pick the best one.
  4. Internal links: Ask AI to suggest 3 to 5 internal links from your existing content. Add them manually.

This turns a 4-hour writing job into a 90-minute editing job. The content is yours. The structure and SEO hygiene come from AI.

The Workflow in Practice

Here is what a weekly AI SEO routine looks like for a small business:

Monday: Run keyword research (10 minutes). Pick 3 target keywords for the week.

Tuesday: Optimise one existing page for each keyword (30 minutes each).

Wednesday: Write or update one new piece of content targeting a content gap (60 minutes with AI assist).

Thursday: Run a technical audit, fix the top 3 issues (30 minutes).

Friday: Check Search Console for pages that dropped in rankings, run them through the optimisation prompt (30 minutes).

Total time: roughly 3 hours a week. No agency retainer. No waiting for reports. Just consistent, incremental progress.

What AI Cannot Do for Your SEO

AI is fast and useful. It is also limited in specific ways:

  • It cannot build backlinks. That requires outreach and relationships.
  • It cannot guarantee rankings. No tool can.
  • It cannot replace genuine expertise. AI writes competently, but your experience is what makes content worth reading.

The right approach is AI for structure and speed, you for substance and trust. The businesses that rank highest are not the ones with the best AI prompts. They are the ones with the best answers to real questions, delivered faster because AI handled the busywork.

Start With This

If you do one thing this week, run your top 5 pages through the content optimisation prompt. Pick the pages that get traffic but do not rank in the top 5 positions. Optimise the meta title, description, H1, and opening paragraph for each.

Five pages. Thirty minutes. That is enough to see whether AI-assisted SEO works for your site.
