Someone tags your brand in an Instagram Story at 11pm on a Saturday. They love your product. Their followers see it. By the time you wake up on Monday, the Story has expired and the moment is gone.

Story mentions are the highest-intent social signal a customer can send. They are public, time-sensitive, and visible to that person’s entire audience. Yet most small businesses miss them because they are not checking their phone at 11pm on a Saturday.

AI changes this. You can now auto-detect brand mentions across Stories, Reels, and comments, and reply within seconds. Not a generic bot reply. A contextual, on-brand response that acknowledges what they posted and keeps the conversation going.

How It Works

The setup has three parts:

  1. Detection: An AI tool monitors your brand mentions, tags, and tagged Stories across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok
  2. Classification: The AI sorts mentions into categories: positive, question, complaint, neutral
  3. Response: Based on the category, the AI drafts a reply using your brand voice guidelines and either posts it automatically (for positive mentions) or queues it for your approval (for complaints or complex questions)

Tools That Do This Today

You do not need to build this from scratch. Several tools already handle social media mention detection and auto-response:

  • Meta Business Suite: Facebook and Instagram’s own tool now uses AI to suggest replies to comments and DMs based on your past responses. Free for any business account.
  • Buffer Reply with AI Assist: Monitors comments and mentions across connected accounts, drafts replies in your brand voice, and queues them for approval. Works for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X.
  • ManyChat: Instagram automation that triggers on Story mentions, DMs, and comments. You set up flows that reply instantly with a customised message based on what the person said.

Pick one tool that covers the platform where you get the most mentions. Do not try to wire up all three at once.

Setting Up Story Mention Auto-Reply

Here is a practical setup using ManyChat for Instagram, since Stories are where most brand mentions happen:

Step 1: Connect Your Instagram Account

Link your Instagram business account to ManyChat. This gives the tool access to Story mentions, DMs, and comment events.

Step 2: Create a Story Mention Trigger

Set up a flow that triggers when someone mentions your account in a Story. The flow should:

  • Send a DM to the person within 60 seconds
  • Reference the Story (ManyChat can detect the media type)
  • Include a thank-you message and a soft CTA (discount code, link to new collection, or invitation to tag you again)

Step 3: Write Your Reply Template

The reply should sound like you, not a bot. Keep it short, warm, and specific:

Hey! Thanks for sharing us in your Story. We love seeing how you styled it. Here is a little something for next time: STORY15 for 15% off. Tag us again anytime.

Three sentences. One discount code. Zero automation energy.

Step 4: Add a Fallback for Questions

If the Story mention includes a question (detected via keyword or Meta’s AI classification), route it to a different flow. Instead of the thank-you template, send:

Hey! Saw your Story and it looks like you have a question. What can we help with? Reply here and we will get back to you first thing in the morning.

This acknowledges the mention instantly, sets expectations on response time, and prevents the customer from feeling ignored.

What About Comments and Reels?

The same principle applies. Set up AI-assisted reply suggestions for comments on your posts and Reels. Meta Business Suite does this for free. Buffer does it with AI assist. The AI reads the comment, suggests a reply based on your past responses, and you approve with one tap.

For high-volume accounts, you can auto-reply to positive comments (emoji reactions, short thank-yous) and queue questions and complaints for manual review. This cuts your comment management time by 70% while keeping a human in the loop for anything sensitive.

The Number That Matters

Story mentions have a 24-hour shelf life. If you do not reply within that window, the social proof disappears and the customer feels ignored. Auto-replying within the first hour increases the chance of that customer posting about you again by 40%.

You are not buying more reach. You are not running ads. You are simply showing up when someone gives you free public attention. That is the entire game.
