Anthropic dropped Claude Design this week, and if you run any kind of online business that touches design, this is worth knowing about.
What happened
Anthropic’s Labs division launched Claude Design, a new tool that turns text prompts into interactive design prototypes. Think of it as a design partner that doesn’t just generate a mockup, it builds something you can actually click through, rearrange, and refine.
The key shift: you describe what you want in plain language, and Claude Design produces a working prototype with real layout, hierarchy, and interactivity. Not a screenshot. Not a static comp. A prototype you can test with users.
Why it matters for small businesses
If you’ve ever paid a designer for three rounds of wireframes before landing on something usable, you understand the bottleneck. Claude Design doesn’t replace designers. It replaces the “I need to see something before I know what I want” phase that burns time and money.
You can use it to:
– Sketch out landing page layouts before hiring a designer
– Prototype new product page ideas without touching code
– Test navigation flows on mobile before paying for development
– Generate quick mockups for investor decks or client proposals
The prototypes export to standard formats, so your designer or developer can pick up where Claude left off.
What to actually do with it
- Start with your highest-traffic page. Describe it in Claude Design, then ask for three alternative layouts. You’ll see options you wouldn’t have thought of.
- Test mobile-first. Most small business sites get 60-70% mobile traffic. Prompt for mobile layouts specifically and see how your content reflows.
- Use it for client communication. If you work with clients who struggle to articulate what they want, have them describe their ideal layout to Claude Design. The output is a better brief than any mood board.
The catch
It’s early. The prototypes are good for layout and flow, but not for brand-perfect design. Typography choices, colour tuning, and pixel-perfect spacing still need human hands. Think of it as a very fast first draft, not a final deliverable.
