OpenAI just dropped a Stickers feature inside ChatGPT that turns any photo, idea, or inside joke into a transparent-background sticker you can export directly to WhatsApp, iMessage, or save to your camera roll. No third-party app. No design skills. No sticker pack builder.
You open ChatGPT, hit the new Stickers section, upload a photo or describe what you want, and it generates a cutout image with a clean transparent background ready for chat apps. That is the whole thing. And it is legitimately useful.
What It Actually Does
The feature sits inside ChatGPT’s Images section on web, iOS, and Android. Here is the workflow:
- Open ChatGPT and go to Images in the sidebar
- Tap Stickers
- Upload a photo or type a description of what you want
- ChatGPT generates a transparent-background PNG that works as a chat sticker
- Edit it: change expressions, add text, swap styles, remove elements
- Hit “Add to chat apps” and send it straight to iMessage, WhatsApp, or save it
The transparent background is the key differentiator. Regular ChatGPT image generation produces flat images. Stickers mode automatically strips the background and outputs a clean PNG that blends into chat UIs without ugly white borders around the image.
What You Can Actually Make
The range is wider than you might think:
- Reaction stickers from your own photos (your actual face, your pet, your kid’s drawing)
- Branded sticker packs for a business (logo variations, product close-ups, seasonal characters)
- Meme stickers with text overlays
- Themed packs that stay visually consistent across multiple stickers
- Inside jokes that only your group chat will understand
The consistency angle is worth noting. You can ask ChatGPT to keep a unified visual style across an entire sticker pack, so your 20 stickers actually look like they belong together rather than 20 random generations stitched into a set.
The Editing Makes It
This is where it gets good for creators. You are not stuck with the first generation. You can:
- Upload your dog’s photo and say “give it sleepy eyes and make it say ‘Not today'”

What WhatsApp and iMessage Actually Support
The “Add to chat apps” button does the heavy lifting:
- iMessage: Stickers appear in a dedicated ChatGPT section inside the Messages sticker carousel. Tap and send.
- WhatsApp: Exports directly as a sticker pack. One catch: WhatsApp requires a minimum of 3 stickers per pack, which is a Meta limitation, not an OpenAI one.
- Save to Photos: Downloads the transparent PNG to your camera roll for use anywhere else.
Instagram, Telegram, and Signal support is not there yet in the direct export, but saved PNGs work everywhere.
Who Can Use It
Anyone with access to ChatGPT Images can use the sticker feature. ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all tiers. Advanced editing tools are rolling out to Plus, Pro, and Business users first. The feature is still in rollout, so if you do not see it yet, it will show up in your account shortly.

Stickers are one of the most engaging content formats in messaging apps. What to Watch For
- Consistency across packs: The style-matching works well for simple prompts but gets loose with complex art directions. Keep your prompts specific if you want a cohesive pack.
- Transparent background quality: Works cleanly on most generations. Complex hair, fur, and transparent objects in the original photo can produce rough edges. Ask ChatGPT to clean up the cutout in those cases.
- Text on stickers: ChatGPT’s text rendering has improved significantly. Short phrases (3-5 words) render reliably. Long sentences still wander.
- Export limits: WhatsApp’s 3-sticker minimum is worth planning around. Generate at least 3 before exporting.
- No Instagram direct export yet: You will need to save to camera roll and add manually.
What This Unlocks
Custom stickers have been a niche design skill. You needed illustration ability or Photoshop knowledge to make anything that did not look amateur. ChatGPT just made that skill accessible to anyone who can describe what they want.
The real unlock is not individual stickers. It is sticker packs as a branding tool. Consistent visual assets that travel through group chats, get shared between friends, and show up in the most personal communication channel people have. That is advertising that people choose to use.
