What It Actually Does and What to Look Out For

Anthropic just released Claude Opus 5, and the headline is simple: near-frontier intelligence at half the price of Fable 5. That is not marketing speak. On coding benchmarks like Frontier-Bench and CursorBench, Opus 5 is within striking distance of Anthropic’s most expensive model, and on knowledge work and automation tasks it takes the top spot outright.

For anyone building with AI, whether that is generating visual content, automating workflows, or running agent pipelines, this is the model that changes the daily math. Here is what it can do and what to look out for.

The Numbers That Matter

Opus 5 is positioned between Opus 4.8 and Fable 5 in Anthropic’s lineup. The key benchmarks:

Frontier-Bench v0.1: Opus 5 surpasses all other models and more than doubles Opus 4.8’s performance at a lower cost per task.

CursorBench 3.2: At max effort, Opus 5 performs within 0.5% of Fable 5’s peak score but at half the cost per task.

Zapier AutomationBench: Opus 5’s pass rate is roughly 1.5x the next-best model for the same cost. Even at its lowest effort setting, it passes more tasks than any other model.

ARC-AGI 3: On novel problem-solving, Opus 5’s score is three times as high as the next-best model.

OSWorld 2.0 (computer use): Opus 5 outperforms every other model at any given cost, surpassing Fable 5’s best result at just over a third of the cost.

The pricing: Opus 5 costs roughly half what Fable 5 costs per token. That means if you have been reserving Fable for high-stakes tasks and falling back to cheaper models for everything else, Opus 5 is the model that fills the gap. It is good enough to be your daily driver and cheap enough to use all day.

Visual Output: The Leap That Matters for Creative Work

Here is the part that has not gotten enough attention. Anthropic specifically called out that Opus 5 is “capable of producing much stronger visual outputs.” Early testers report the best animations, games, and 3D work they have seen from any Opus model.

Lovable, the app builder platform, found that Opus 5 is not just better on agentic coding tasks (up 22% over Opus 4.7) but “steadier, with far less variance run to run.” For anyone generating front-end code, interactive prototypes, or visual content through AI, consistency is everything. A model that produces stunning output one run and unusable output the next is frustrating. A model that reliably hits a high bar is the one you build workflows around.

One early-access tester gave Opus 5 a drawing of a machine part and asked it to write code for a 3D FreeCAD model. The twist: the model was not given any way to directly view the drawing. Opus 5 wrote its own computer vision pipeline to pull geometry from the raw pixels, then reconstructed the full machine part. No other model could solve the same task after five attempts.

That kind of self-directed problem solving is what separates a model you occasionally use from one you trust to run entire workflows.

What This Unlocks

Better design generation at lower cost. If you have been using Fable 5 for visual content generation because Opus was not cutting it, Opus 5 closes the gap at half the price. That means more iterations, more variations, more experiments without burning through your API budget.

Reliable agent workflows. Opus 5’s efficiency gains (26% fewer tokens on average compared to Opus 4.8 at max reasoning for similar quality) mean your agents can run longer and handle more complex tasks before hitting context limits. The Zapier result is telling: it ran a full churn-prevention sequence end to end, flagging at-risk accounts, alerting the right owner, and summarizing for retention ops, with 100% pass rate.

Stronger visual code output. The front-end improvement is real. Better animations, better 3D, better interactive prototypes. If you are generating UI code or visual prototypes with AI, this is the upgrade that makes the output more production-ready without manual fixes.

Cheaper daily operations. The biggest practical shift is cost. At roughly half the price of Fable 5, Opus 5 makes it viable to run AI-powered workflows for tasks that were previously too expensive to automate. Customer support triage, content generation pipelines, design iteration loops. Things that required Fable-level intelligence but at Opus-level pricing.

How to Use It

Opus 5 is available now through the Claude API, on Amazon Bedrock, and in Anthropic’s own products. It is the new default model on Claude Max and the strongest model on Claude Pro.

API: Use model name claude-opus-5-20250724. Pricing is $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens for the standard tier.

Effort settings: Opus 5 supports Anthropic’s effort ladder, letting you trade intelligence for speed and cost. At lower effort settings, it still outperforms most competitors. Reserve max effort for the hardest tasks and run routine work at high or medium.

Context window: 1 million tokens, same as Opus 4.8. Enough to process long documents, entire codebases, or multi-step agent traces without truncation.

For visual content specifically: If you are generating code for UI components, interactive prototypes, or front-end designs, Opus 5’s improved visual output means fewer rounds of manual editing. The output is not just functionally correct, it looks right. That is the difference between a prototype you show internally and one you could ship.

What to Look Out For

It is not Fable 5. Opus 5 gets close to Fable on most benchmarks but does not surpass it everywhere. On cybersecurity tasks specifically, Mythos 5 still leads. If you need absolute peak intelligence for the hardest problems, Fable remains the top option.

Visual output is still code-based, not image generation. When Anthropic says “much stronger visual outputs,” they mean Opus 5 generates better-looking front-end code, 3D models, and interactive content. It does not generate images directly. For image generation, you still need a dedicated model like DALL-E, Flux, or Recraft.

The effort ladder is a new muscle to learn. Opus 5 is designed to work efficiently at lower effort levels, but most people default to max effort. The productivity gain comes from matching effort to task complexity. Simple formatting does not need max reasoning. Save that for architecture decisions and complex debugging.

Prompt caching is your friend. Opus 5 is prompt-cache-friendly, which means you can reduce costs further by caching system prompts and frequently used context. If you are running agent workflows, this alone can cut your bill significantly.

The Bottom Line

Claude Opus 5 is the model that makes frontier-level AI affordable for daily use. If you have been picking between cost and quality, running cheap models for routine tasks and expensive ones for important ones, Opus 5 collapses that choice. It is good enough to be your default and cheap enough to run all day.

For creative and design workflows specifically, the improved visual code output and reduced variance mean more reliable results in fewer iterations. That is not a marginal improvement. That is the difference between a tool you occasionally use and one you build your workflow around.
