The gift order that arrives looking like a receipt
Every Christmas, a slice of your orders are not for the buyer at all. They are presents, wrapped by a machine, sealed in a box that says nothing, accompanied by paperwork that lists prices on the day someone else opens it. The buyer did everything right. The store turned their thoughtful purchase into a delivery that feels like a bank statement. Five gift-mode fixes, all copy-paste ready, each one edited into systems you already run.
1. The checkbox that costs nothing and changes the order
The gift option has to appear before payment, one line, no sub-page: “This is a gift? We will leave prices off the packing slip.” Where to put it and what it actually triggers:
<label>
<input type="checkbox" name="is_gift">
This is a gift. No prices on the packing slip.
</label>
<!-- packing slip template -->
<?php if (!empty($order->get_meta('is_gift'))): ?>
<!-- omit all price columns, show product names and quantities only -->
<?php endif; ?>That is the whole feature in most platforms: a flag plus a template edit. Shopify themes can do the same by reading the cart attribute and hiding totals on the order status and packing-slip templates.
2. The gift note, typed by the buyer, written by hand
A printed gift card that reads like a spreadsheet cell kills the moment. Give the note room, keep it short by design, and print it warm.
<label for="gift_note">Your message (200 characters, we handwrite it)</label>
<textarea id="gift_note" name="gift_note" maxlength="200"
placeholder="Merry Christmas Mum, sorry about the tent...">“We handwrite it” only if it is true. If it is printed, say “we print it on a proper card”, which is still a hundred times better than till-roll. The note goes inside the box, unsigned by the machine, because the signature belongs to the buyer.
3. Hide the paper trail from the parcel
Gift mode is not just hiding prices: it is hiding the buyer’s copy of everything. The invoice does not go in the box, it goes to the buyer’s email, marked “your receipt, not included in the parcel”. The packing slip carries what the recipient needs: what it is, who it is from (first name is enough if the buyer asked), and how to contact you if something is wrong, without an account number or an email address on display.
Packing slip (gift mode):
Order for: [recipient first name]
From: [buyer first name]
Items: names + quantities
No prices, no buyer contact details, no account references4. Returns that protect the giver, not the wallet
Nothing sours a gift like “how do I return this without telling them what it cost”. Two lines make gift returns work the way Christmas actually behaves:
Gift returns, stated on the packing slip:
Exchanges and gift cards are fine within 30 days, no receipt needed,
and the price never appears in any email we send you about it.“The price never appears” is the sentence a giftee actually needs, and for an exchange-or-credit flow it is easy to honour: refund the difference as store credit, never as a number in an email.
5. Set the delivery expectation in the buyer’s language
Gift buyers are not buying a product, they are buying a date. The shipping confirmation should speak the calendar:
Subject: Ordering for Christmas? Here are the last dates.
Body: Order by [date] for delivery before Dec 25 to most of Australia.
We will email you the tracking the moment it leaves us.Publish the dates on a page and link it from the shipping email and the checkout header. The buyer forwards that one email to whoever is waiting, which is the most useful forward your store will ever get.
Why this earns December
Every fix here replaces a receipt with a gesture: prices gone, a note handwritten at human scale, the invoice diverted, returns that spare the giver, and dates in plain words. None of it costs margin. All of it happens in templates you already send. That is the quiet work a store does for Christmas, and the giftee never sees your systems, only the care that arrived with the box.
