Runway just launched an MCP server that connects its entire generation studio to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Replit, and any other MCP-compatible agent. You type a prompt inside your coding agent or chat window. The video comes back in the same conversation. No tab switching. No API wrestling. No separate dashboard.
This is not a plugin. This is not a browser extension. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets AI agents talk to external tools. Runway is the first major creative platform to ship a production-grade MCP server. The result: you can now generate product images, marketing videos, hero assets, and dialogue-driven ads without leaving whatever environment you already work in.
What You Can Actually Do
Here is what Runway MCP gives you, directly from your agent:
Generate images and videos from a text prompt. Ask your agent to create a product shot, a hero image, a social asset. Runway picks the right model and returns the output in your conversation.
Turn a product URL into a marketing video. Paste a product page link. Tell your agent to create a polished launch video. Runway pulls the product details and generates the video. Done in the same window you are writing code or copy in.
Create dialogue-driven product ads. Write a line of dialogue, set the scene, and let Runway produce a character-led product ad. The example on Runway’s launch page: two crabs arguing over a can of fizz. One says “don’t be so shellfish.” You type that. Runway builds it.
Build product sites with generated imagery. Give your agent a product image. Ask it to generate hero video, product shots, and lifestyle assets, then build the marketing site around them. All without leaving your editor.
Restyle and remix existing assets. Drop in a reference image and ask your agent to create new visual variations. Change the season, swap the background, restyle the whole thing.
The Models You Get
Runway MCP gives you access to the current generation of image and video models in one connector:
- Gen-4.5 for Runway’s latest video generation
- Gen-4 Turbo for faster video generation
- Seedance 2.0 for high-fidelity video with strong identity consistency
- Kling 3.0 for multi-shot video and motion transfer
- Veo 3.1 for Google’s latest video model
- GPT Image 2 for OpenAI’s image generation
- Nano Banana Pro for fast, production-quality images
- Gen-4 Image for Runway’s native image generation
Your agent can pick the right model for the task, or you can specify which one you want. No separate accounts. No per-model API keys. Sign in with your existing Runway account and your credits follow you.
How to Set It Up
The setup takes about 30 seconds:
- Open your MCP-compatible agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Replit)
- Add a custom connector named “Runway”
- Paste the MCP server URL:
https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp - Sign in with your Runway account
- Start generating
No API key management. No separate billing setup. Your generations use your existing Runway plan credits. Everything you generate saves to your Runway library alongside the rest of your work.
What This Unlocks
The biggest shift here is workflow, not model quality. The models were already available inside Runway’s own app. What MCP does is collapse the distance between thinking about a visual and having it.
You no longer need to context-switch between your coding environment and a generation dashboard. You no longer need to download assets, re-upload them, or copy-paste URLs between windows. The generation happens where the work happens.
For anyone building a website, creating a marketing pipeline, or producing content at speed, this removes the single biggest friction point: the gap between your creative tool and your production environment. Ask your agent to generate a hero video for a product page. It generates it. You keep building.
For small teams and solo creators who do not have a dedicated motion designer on call, this is the difference between “I need to open another tool” and “I just told my agent to make it.” That gap is where most creative work dies. Runway just closed it.
What to Watch
The MCP standard is still young. Not every agent supports it perfectly. Cursor works well. Claude and ChatGPT support is solid. Replit is there. But the experience will vary depending on how well your agent handles multi-step generation workflows.
Also worth noting: this is tied to your Runway plan. Generations use credits, and the more demanding models (Gen-4.5, Seedance 2.0) burn through them faster. If you are running a high-volume pipeline, watch your credit balance.
The real question is what happens when every creative tool ships an MCP server. If Runway, Canva, and Figma are all accessible from the same agent window, the workflow becomes: describe what you want, the agent picks the right tool, and you iterate. That is the direction. Runway just got there first for video and image generation.
