Most Businesses Set Up One Welcome Email and Call It Done
The welcome email gets written, scheduled, and forgotten. Meanwhile, three automations that could be generating revenue on autopilot never get built. Not because they are complicated. Because most people do not know they exist.
Here are three email automations that earn money while you are not at your desk. Each one takes under 30 minutes to set up and runs forever.
1. The Post-Purchase Upsell Sequence
Someone just bought from you. Their wallet is open. Their trust is at its highest point. What do most businesses do? Send a receipt and go silent.
The post-purchase sequence sends three emails after a customer buys:
- Email 1 (Day 1): Thank you + care instructions or usage tips. No selling. Just value. This builds trust for the next email.
- Email 2 (Day 3): The complementary product. If they bought a candle, suggest the wick trimmer. If they bought a face cream, suggest the moisturiser that goes with it. One product, one sentence, one link.
- Email 3 (Day 7): The reorder or referral prompt. If it is a consumable, remind them to restock. If it is not, offer a referral code they can share.
How to set it up: In your email tool (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend), create a flow triggered by “Order Placed.” Set the delays to 1, 3, and 7 days. Write three short emails. Done.
What it earns: Post-purchase sequences typically add 5-15% more revenue per customer. That is not a percentage of total revenue. That is 5-15% more from every person who already bought.
2. The Win-Back Campaign
Customers who bought 60-90 days ago and have not returned are not gone. They are just not thinking about you. A single well-timed email can bring 10-15% of them back.
The win-back is simple:
- Trigger: Customer has not placed an order in 60 days.
- Email 1 (Day 60): “We miss you” with a small discount or free shipping offer. Keep it short. One paragraph, one offer, one button.
- Email 2 (Day 67): A product recommendation based on their last purchase. “Thought you might like this” feels personal even when it is automated.
- Email 3 (Day 75): Last chance. “Your discount expires in 48 hours.” Urgency works when it is real.
How to set it up: Create a segment of customers who last purchased 60+ days ago. Set a flow with three emails spaced one week apart. Add a conditional: if they buy after any email, stop the flow.
What it earns: Win-back emails typically see 3-8% conversion. For a store with 500 lapsed customers, that is 15-40 customers who come back and buy again.
3. The Browse Abandonment Flow
Cart abandonment emails get all the attention. But 70% of people who browse your site never add anything to their cart. They look, they leave, and you never hear from them again.
Browse abandonment emails target these people. They saw a product. They spent time on the page. They just did not click “Add to Cart.”
- Trigger: Customer viewed a product page but did not add to cart within 30 minutes.
- Email 1 (30 minutes later): “Still thinking about it?” with the product image, a one-line benefit, and a direct link back to the page.
- Email 2 (24 hours later, only if they did not buy): A social proof nudge. “120 people bought this last week” or one short review quote. No discount. Just reassurance.
How to set it up: In Klaviyo or your email tool, create a flow triggered by “Viewed Product” with a filter for “Not Added to Cart.” Set delays at 30 minutes and 24 hours. Keep both emails under 75 words.
What it earns: Browse abandonment flows typically convert at 2-5%. That sounds low until you realise these are people who would have otherwise disappeared entirely. Even a 3% conversion from your top 1,000 product page visitors is 30 extra sales a month.
How to Set Up All Three in One Afternoon
Block out 90 minutes. Open your email tool. Build them in this order:
- Post-purchase upsell (30 min): You already know what complementary products to suggest. Write three short emails and schedule them.
- Win-back campaign (30 min): Create the segment. Write three emails. Set the delays. Add the conditional stop rule.
- Browse abandonment (30 min): Create the trigger. Write two emails under 75 words each. Turn it on.
Ninety minutes of setup. Three automations that run every day, for every customer, without you touching them.
