Canva just apologised after its new AI feature, Magic Layers, was caught replacing the word “Palestine” with “Ukraine” in user designs.<\/p>\n
The issue was raised on X by user Rosie, who found that when Magic Layers separated text from an image, it silently swapped country names. Palestine became Ukraine. Other users reported similar text replacements with other place names.<\/p>\n
Magic Layers is part of Canva’s AI 2.0 update, launched just two weeks ago at Canva Create. The feature uses AI to break flat designs into editable layers, separating text, images, and backgrounds so you can edit each independently. The idea is solid. The execution clearly is not.<\/p>\n
If you have a flattened design (like an exported PNG or a JPEG someone sent you), Magic Layers uses AI to reverse-engineer it into editable components. It reads the text, lifts it off the background, and makes everything adjustable again.<\/p>\n
For small business owners who receive logos, flyers, or social posts as flat files from clients or colleagues, this is useful. No more re-creating the whole thing from scratch just to fix a typo.<\/p>\n
The AI does not just separate text. It interprets it. And sometimes it changes it.<\/p>\n
In the case flagged this week, Magic Layers read “Palestine” in a design and replaced it with “Ukraine.” Canva says this was not intentional censorship. It was the AI making an incorrect text prediction during the layer-separation process.<\/p>\n
But the result is the same either way. A tool that silently rewrites your text without telling you is a trust problem, not a tech problem.<\/p>\n
You use Canva to create marketing materials, social posts, client presentations, and product graphics. If the AI is changing words in your designs without your knowledge, that is a real risk.<\/p>\n

If you use Magic Layers, check every piece of text it extracts before you publish or send anything. Do not trust the AI output blindly. Read through every word.<\/p>\n
For now, the safest approach is to treat Magic Layers as a time-saver that gets you 90% of the way there, and then manually verify the last 10%.<\/p>\n
This is not just a Canva problem. Every AI design tool that interprets, rewrites, or “enhances” your content carries this risk. The industry is moving fast, and features are shipping before they are fully tested.<\/p>\n
As a small business owner, your brand voice and accuracy are non-negotiable. AI tools should make you faster, not make decisions for you.<\/p>\n
Magic Layers is still a useful feature. But this incident is a reminder: when an AI tool touches your words, you need to read them again before anyone else does.<\/p>\n
