Spline just shipped V2, and it is not a feature bump. It is a complete rebuild of the 3D editor on WebGPU, with an AI agent that can build entire scenes from a description, a new code editor layer, and an MCP server that lets Claude Code, Cursor, and ChatGPT drive the editor directly.<\/p>\n
This is the first 3D design tool that treats AI agents as first-class users, not a chat sidebar. And it changes what you can actually make.<\/p>\n
The headline feature is the AI Agent<\/strong>. It lives in the sidebar and works through the same design system a human creator uses. It reads the scene, runs the editor tools, takes screenshots to verify its work, and iterates. It can create objects, assign materials, set up lights and cameras, run booleans, configure particles and cloners, build lathes, adjust sky settings, and wire up interactivity through events and states.<\/p>\n That last part matters most. The agent does not just make things that look right in a still frame. It builds scenes that react<\/em>. Buttons that respond, objects that animate on hover, interactive prototypes that work.<\/p>\n It writes code too. When something is easier expressed in code than through the scene graph, the agent generates the HTML and JS, wires it into the scene, and keeps going. For layout, it uses a constraint solver instead of guessing coordinates. You tell it objects should be near, apart, on top of, or facing each other, and the solver figures out where everything goes.<\/p>\n Here is the part that should get attention from anyone working with AI agents. Spline V2 ships an MCP server<\/strong>. That means Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, and Antigravity can all drive the editor through the same tools the built-in agent uses.<\/p>\n Open the desktop app alongside your AI tool. Spline detects it automatically. Ask for something and a tab indicator lights up while it works. No setup, no API keys, no integration project. Your existing agent workflow now has a 3D editor it can manipulate directly.<\/p>\n For anyone already building with MCP servers, this is significant. You can describe a 3D scene in natural language inside your coding agent, and it materialises in Spline. Change it with a follow-up. Export it. Embed it on a site. The loop between ideation and output just got shorter.<\/p>\n Under the hood, the renderer has been rebuilt on WebGPU<\/strong>, which is now the default. WebGL is the fallback. The practical upshot: scenes draw with far less overhead, heavier files stay interactive, more objects fit on screen, and files reach their first frame faster. The new lighting, reflections, and simulation features all depend on WebGPU running in real time.<\/p>\n The new materials system got a full PBR pass with image-based lighting and an HDR colour pipeline. Models keep their shading when imported from other tools. A new reflection layer adds screen-space reflections on WebGPU, plus a Mirror toggle for true planar mirrors.<\/p>\n Two new skies are available: Physical Sky<\/strong>, procedural with its own dome light and intensity dial, and HDRi Sky<\/strong>, which uses an HDR image as the environment with a switch to keep the lighting but hide the backdrop.<\/p>\n Two new material layers join the roster: Dust<\/strong>, which accumulates dust or snow on upward-facing surfaces (immediately useful for product renders), and Vertex Color<\/strong>, for models that carry their colour in the mesh.<\/p>\n Height fog joins classic depth fog and responds to camera angle. A new Hair System<\/strong> grows hair from a scalp shape or any mesh, with lighting, shadows, wind, and clumping.<\/p>\n On the modeling side: a new Bevel\/Chamfer tool<\/strong> with round mode, segment control, and smarter edge-loop selection. Texture projection gained axis control for cylindrical and spherical modes. Sculpting gained brush symmetry. UVs now work on sculpted and editable meshes. Shape blend was rebuilt from scratch with higher resolution and any mesh as a source.<\/p>\n The editor now works in three modes. Edit<\/strong> is the canvas. Code<\/strong> is a proper code editor with syntax highlighting, Spline API completions, and autosave. Preview<\/strong> plays the whole thing, scene and HTML\/JS together.<\/p>\n A new HTML overlay layer lets you put HTML and JS over the canvas, with a bridge into the scene. Motion, interactivity, and entire games can be built in code rather than through the graph. The agent uses this too, generating UI, logic, and game loops in code.<\/p>\n Booleans were rewritten: roughly 4 times faster, and reliable on the geometry that used to break them. Cloners draw more efficiently, so scenes with lots of repeated objects stay smooth. Faster ambient occlusion, faster selection, faster tessellation, better shadow performance, improved physics contacts, and a long list of memory and idle-time fixes.<\/p>\n Exports are smaller too. The base runtime shrank, and its size adapts to what a scene actually uses, so scenes load faster.<\/p>\n The desktop app was rebuilt from the ground up for macOS and Windows. Scenes open as real tabs, each isolated so a heavy one cannot take the app down. Background tabs are not throttled, so a render keeps going while you model in another. Hana files sit in the same strip, so you can work on both editors at the same time.<\/p>\n The real shift here is not any single feature. It is the combination. A 3D editor that AI agents can drive natively, with code generation built in, running on a faster renderer with better materials, and accessible from the coding agent you already use.<\/p>\n For small teams and solo creators, this means you can describe a 3D interactive scene in natural language and get something tangible in seconds. For developers, it means your agent workflow now includes 3D output.
