Adobe dropped Photoshop 27.10 this week and it changes how image editing works. Not a new filter. Not a new slider. A whole new editing mode where you describe what you want in plain English, or just draw on the image to show Photoshop what to change.<\/p>\n
It is called AI Assisted Editor and it is optional. You toggle it on from the menu bar. When you do, the full Photoshop interface collapses into a simplified panel with a handful of tools: Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale, and a new one called Markup.<\/p>\n
Markup is the one to watch. You sketch directly on the image. Draw a circle around a shoe. Add a text note that says “change this shoe.” Draw an arrow pointing at the sky and write “add more clouds.” Firefly reads your sketch and your instructions together and makes the edit. No precise masking. No layer gymnastics. Just rough marks and plain language.<\/p>\n
That is a big deal for two kinds of people. Designers who want to move fast on rough concepts can sketch a direction and get a rendered result in seconds. People who have never used Photoshop can now make real edits without learning the tool.<\/p>\n
Prompt to Edit<\/strong> — Type what you want changed. “Turn this daytime shot into a night scene.” “Make it look like a watercolour painting.” The model edits the entire image and returns two variations on a new layer. This tool supports FLUX 2 Pro, FLUX Context Pro, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro, Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, and Adobe’s own Firefly model. You pick the model.<\/p>\n Markup<\/strong> — Draw on the image. Circle an area, add a text instruction. Firefly interprets both the sketch and the words. It is the closest thing to “just show me what you mean” that Photoshop has ever had.<\/p>\n Generative Fill<\/strong> — Select an area, describe what should go there. Same tech from before, now inside the simplified interface.<\/p>\n Remove Tool<\/strong> — Paint over something you want gone. Firefly fills the gap realistically.<\/p>\n Generative Expand<\/strong> — Extend the canvas in any direction. Firefly generates content that blends with what is already there.<\/p>\n Generative Upscale<\/strong> — Increase resolution while keeping sharpness.<\/p>\n Remove Background<\/strong> — One click. Refine edges. Done.<\/p>\n Outside the new AI Assisted Editor, Photoshop 27.10 also added a proper Light adjustment layer. Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks are now non-destructive layers. That is Camera Raw-level lighting control inside your Photoshop layers workflow, without bouncing between apps.<\/p>\n There is also prompt-based masked editing. Select just the part of the image you want Firefly to change, write your prompt, and the edit stays contained to that area with lighting and angle that match the rest of the shot. Adobe says this directly addresses the quality complaints from earlier prompt-based editing, where global edits sometimes produced inconsistent lighting.<\/p>\n And Dynamic Text now works on any custom shape or path. Text flows along curves and freeform layouts automatically. No manual rework.<\/p>\n Plus a Stock Panel that puts 900 million Adobe Stock assets inside Photoshop in a dockable panel. Discover, preview, and drop assets into your file without leaving the app.<\/p>\n The AI Assisted Editor is in beta. The simplified mode is a clear signal that Adobe is building a Photoshop experience for people who do not know what a layer mask is. If the Markup feature works as advertised, it removes the biggest barrier to AI editing: the gap between what you imagine and what you can describe in a text prompt. Being able to point and draw narrows that gap dramatically.<\/p>\n Prompt to Edit supporting multiple models is also significant. You are not locked into Firefly. You can pick the model that suits the job. That is the first time Photoshop has let you choose between competing image models inside the app.<\/p>\n The non-destructive Light layer is one of those quiet updates that changes daily workflow. Photographers have been asking for this for years. It means you can tweak exposure without committing to it, without leaving Photoshop, without exporting to Camera Raw first.<\/p>\n The practical takeaway: if you do any kind of image editing, even occasionally, the AI Assisted Editor beta is worth installing today.
