The problem is that most store search bars are terrible. They return zero results for typos, ignore synonyms, and show a flat list of products without any visual hierarchy. A few small tweaks can turn your search bar from a basic function into your best-performing sales channel.<\/p>\n
When a customer types “can” they should see candle options appearing before they finish typing “candle.” Predictive search (also called instant search or search-as-you-type) shows results in a dropdown the moment someone starts typing.<\/p>\n
The key is showing product images<\/strong> in the dropdown, not just text. A wall of text results feels like a spreadsheet. A grid of 4 to 6 product images with names and prices feels like a mini shopping experience.<\/p>\n What to include in each predictive result:<\/p>\n Most Shopify themes support predictive search natively. If yours does not, apps like Fast Simon, Instant Search+, and Searchanise add it without code. The setup takes under an hour.<\/p>\n When someone searches for “coconut wax” and you do not sell coconut wax products, the default response is “No results found.” That is a dead end. The customer leaves.<\/p>\n Instead, your zero-results page should show:<\/p>\n The goal is to never let a search end with zero options. Even if the exact product does not exist, the customer should see something that might work.<\/p>\n To set this up in Shopify, edit your search.liquid template. Replace the “no results” block with a section that pulls best-sellers from the “All” collection. No app needed, just theme edits.<\/p>\n Your customers type fast. They type “canddle” instead of “candle.” They type “soy” when they mean “soy wax.” They type “gift” when they mean “gift set.” If your search bar does not recognise these variations, it returns nothing.<\/p>\n Synonym mapping fixes this. You create a list of word pairs that the search treats as equivalent:<\/p>\n Most search apps let you upload a CSV of synonyms. If you are using Shopify’s native search, you can add a search redirect: when someone searches “canddle,” redirect them to the search results for “candle.” It is not as elegant as true synonym mapping, but it works.<\/p>\n Spend 15 minutes reviewing your search analytics (most search apps log the top zero-result queries) and map synonyms for the top 10 misspellings. This one tweak can recover 10 to 20% of lost searches.<\/p>\n Sometimes customers do not know what to search for. A trending searches bar gives them a starting point. It shows 4 to 6 popular search terms as small clickable pills above or below the search input.<\/p>\n Example: “Popular: candle gift sets | soy wax | summer scents | sale”<\/p>\n This does three things:<\/p>\n Update the trending terms weekly based on your search analytics. Show the top 4 to 6 queries from the past 7 days. If a term is seasonal (like “Christmas gifts” in December), add it manually.<\/p>\n In Shopify, you can build this with a custom section in your header. Store the trending terms as theme settings and update them through the theme editor. No app required.<\/p>\n The default search results page on most Shopify themes is a vertical list of products with small thumbnails. This is the least engaging layout possible. Search results should look like a product collection page, with a grid of large product images, prices, and quick-add buttons.<\/p>\n Specifically:<\/p>\n If your theme’s search results page looks different from your collection pages, that is the problem. They should look identical. A customer who searches is not a different type of shopper. They just got to the products faster.<\/p>\n To fix this, duplicate your collection page template and use it for search results. In Shopify, create a new section called “search-grid” and assign it to the search template. This takes about 30 minutes if you are comfortable with Liquid.<\/p>\n Every search query is free market research. Your customers are telling you exactly what they want. If you see 50 searches for “refill” and you do not sell refills, there is your next product line.<\/p>\n Most search apps provide analytics dashboards. If you are using native Shopify search, you can use Google Analytics 4 to track search terms as events. Set up a GA4 event for “search” with the search term as a parameter. After 30 days, check the top 20 queries and ask:<\/p>\n Review your search data once a month. It will tell you what to stock, what to name your products, and what your customers actually call things (which is often different from what you call them).<\/p>\n None of these tweaks require a developer.
