Every product page has the same problem. Customers have questions that your product description does not answer. They either guess, leave, or email you. The ones who email take up your time. The ones who guess buy the wrong thing and return it. The ones who leave just cost you a sale.<\/p>\n

A customer question tab fixes all three. It sits right on the product page, lets shoppers ask anything, and shows answers from previous customers so most questions never reach your inbox. You do not need a plugin. You do not need a developer. You need about 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

What You Are Building<\/h2>\n

A simple tab next to your product description that does two things: lets visitors type a question, and displays questions other shoppers have already asked with your answers. Think of it as a living FAQ that writes itself based on what real customers actually want to know.<\/p>\n

The difference between this and a static FAQ section is that a FAQ guesses what people will ask. A question tab collects what they actually ask. Over time, you will notice patterns. The same five questions pop up for every product. Those go into your product description. The rest stay in the tab.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Create the HTML Structure<\/h2>\n

Start with a tab system on your product page. Most e-commerce platforms already have tabs for Description, Specifications, and Reviews. You are adding one more.<\/p>\n

Inside that tab, you need two sections: a question input area at the top, and a list of previously asked questions below it. The input area is a simple form with a text field and a submit button. The question list is a set of expandable items.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Set Up the Submission Flow<\/h2>\n

When a customer types a question and hits submit, the question needs to go somewhere. The simplest approach is to send it to your email with the product name and URL in the subject line. You do this with a basic form handler.<\/p>\n

On Shopify, use the contact form action. On WordPress, use a simple PHP mail handler or a form plugin that accepts AJAX submissions. On Squarespace, use the built-in form block connected to your email.<\/p>\n

The form should capture three things: the question text, the product name or ID, and the customer email (optional, for reply notifications). Keep it to one field if you want maximum submissions. Add the email field if you want to reply directly.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Display Existing Questions and Answers<\/h2>\n

This is where the magic happens. Every question you answer gets added to the list. The first few questions will come from your inbox. When a customer emails about a product, answer their question and add it to the tab.<\/p>\n

Format each question as a collapsible row. The question text is visible. The answer expands when clicked. This keeps the list compact even when you have 20 or 30 answered questions.<\/p>\n

Sort questions by usefulness, not by date. Put the most common questions at the top. You will know which ones are common because you will see them in your email repeatedly.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Add a Search Box Once You Hit 15 Questions<\/h2>\n

Once your question list grows past 15 items, add a small search box at the top of the questions tab. Customers type a keyword and the list filters live. This stops the tab from becoming a wall of text.<\/p>\n

You can do this with about 10 lines of JavaScript. Listen for input on the search field, loop through question items, and hide any that do not contain the search term. No server needed.<\/p>\n

Step 5: Tag Questions by Topic<\/h2>\n

After a month, you will notice questions cluster around a few themes: sizing, shipping, materials, compatibility, and care instructions. Add small tags to each question so customers can filter by topic.<\/p>\n

Tags are simple coloured labels above the question text. Five tags cover 90% of questions for most stores. Clicking a tag filters the list to show only questions with that tag.<\/p>\n

Step 6: Promote Your Best Answers Into the Product Description<\/h2>\n

After two months, review your question tab. Any question asked more than three times does not belong in the tab. It belongs in the product description. Move the answer into the main copy and remove it from the questions list.<\/p>\n

This is how the tab stays useful. It always shows the questions that have not yet been absorbed into the product page. When a new question type emerges, it gets its moment in the tab, then graduates to the description once it becomes common.<\/p>\n

What to Measure<\/h2>\n

Track two numbers. First, count how many questions get submitted per week. A working tab should capture 3 to 10 questions per week on a moderately trafficked product page. Second, count how many support emails you get about product-specific questions. That number should drop by 40 to 60% within the first month.<\/p>\n

If submissions are low, make the tab more visible. Move it next to the Add to Cart button instead of below the description. If submissions are high but answers are sparse, batch your replies. Spend 15 minutes every Friday answering all the questions from the week.<\/p>\n

Common Mistakes to Avoid<\/h2>\n

Do not require an account to ask a question. Most customers will not create one just to type a sentence. Let them ask anonymously and optionally leave an email.<\/p>\n

Do not auto-publish questions without moderation. You will get spam. Review questions once a day and publish the real ones with your answer attached.<\/p>\n

Do not let the tab replace your product description. The tab is for edge cases. If a question appears more than three times, your description is missing information. Fix the description, not the tab.<\/p>\n
