Most shoppers look at 2 and scroll past the rest. The problem is not the photography. It is the thumbnail layout.

Thumbnails are the small preview images that sit below or beside the main product image. They are the navigation system for your gallery. When they are poorly designed, shoppers do not realise there are more photos to see. When they are well-designed, shoppers click through every single one.

Here are 5 thumbnail layout tweaks that fix the most common drop-off points.

1. Show All Thumbnails in a Single Horizontal Row

Many stores stack thumbnails vertically in a narrow column beside the main image. On mobile, this means shoppers see 2 or 3 thumbnails and assume that is all there is. They never scroll down the column to discover the rest.

Switch to a horizontal row of thumbnails beneath the main image. This works on both desktop and mobile. When thumbnails are in a row, the human eye treats them as a film strip. People naturally swipe or click left to right, which is exactly the behaviour you want.

On mobile, make sure the row is swipeable and that the first 4 to 5 thumbnails are visible without scrolling. If shoppers can see there are more thumbnails than they can fit on screen, they will swipe to explore. If they see only 3 thumbnails and no indication of more, they stop.

2. Make the Active Thumbnail Obvious

When a shopper clicks a thumbnail and the main image changes, the thumbnail they clicked should look different from the others. This sounds basic, but a shocking number of stores have no active state on their thumbnails.

Add a 2-pixel border or a slight opacity reduction (around 70 percent) to the inactive thumbnails. The active one stays at full opacity with no border, or gets a coloured border that matches your brand accent. This tells the shopper two things: which photo they are currently looking at, and that the other thumbnails are clickable too.

Without an active state, shoppers click a thumbnail, the main image changes, and they are not sure if it changed because of their click or on its own. That moment of confusion is enough to make them stop exploring.

3. Use Numbered Dots Instead of Thumbnails on Mobile Only

On mobile screens, thumbnails get tiny. 6 thumbnails in a row on a 5-inch screen means each one is about 50 pixels wide. At that size, shoppers cannot tell what the photo shows, so they do not click.

Replace the thumbnail row with numbered dots (like an Instagram carousel indicator) on mobile only. Dot 1, dot 2, dot 3, and so on. Shoppers swipe through the main image and the dots track their position.

This works because on mobile, the main image is large enough to see detail. The thumbnails are not adding value at 50 pixels. The dots tell them how many photos exist and which one they are on, which is all the navigation they need.

Keep full thumbnails on desktop. On a 15-inch screen, thumbnails are large enough to be useful for jumping to a specific photo.

4. Put Your Most Unusual Photo Second, Not Last

Most stores arrange photos in a logical order: front view, back view, detail shot, lifestyle shot, and so on. This is sensible but predictable. By photo 3, the shopper has seen the product from every standard angle and stops clicking.

Put your most visually different photo in position 2. If you have a lifestyle shot showing the product in use, a close-up of an unusual texture, or a photo with a surprising colour pop, make it the second thumbnail.

Here is why: photo 1 is always the hero shot. Every shopper sees it. Photo 2 is the first decision point. If photo 2 looks like more of the same, they stop. If photo 2 shows something unexpected, they click to see it. And once they have clicked twice, they are in the gallery mindset and will keep going through 3, 4, 5, and 6.

This is the same principle streaming services use with thumbnail carousels. The second card is always the most visually distinct one, because that is the card that converts browsers into clickers.

5. Add a Subtle Counter Below the Gallery

Place a small text counter beneath the main image that reads “Photo 2 of 6” and updates as the shopper navigates. This does three things at once.

First, it tells the shopper how many photos exist. If they see “Photo 2 of 6,” they know there are 4 more to look at. Without this counter, they have no idea how many photos are in the gallery and no reason to keep clicking.

Second, it creates a subtle completion urge. People like to finish things. Seeing “2 of 6” makes them want to get to “6 of 6.” It is the same psychology that makes people watch an entire Instagram story instead of tapping away after the first slide.

Third, it helps shoppers who left the page and came back remember where they were. If they were comparing your product with a competitor and return to your page, the counter helps them pick up where they left off.

Keep the counter small and unobtrusive. 12 pixels, grey, centred beneath the main image. It should inform, not distract.

How to Implement These in Under 30 Minutes

If you are on Shopify, most of these are theme settings, not code changes:

Horizontal thumbnail row: check your theme settings under Product Page > Gallery Layout. Most modern Shopify themes (Dawn, Sense, Refresh) offer a horizontal thumbnail option.

Active thumbnail state: this is usually on by default in current themes. If yours does not have it, add a CSS rule:
.thumbnail.is-active { opacity: 1; border: 2px solid #your-accent-colour; } .thumbnail { opacity: 0.7; }

Mobile dots: some themes have a “mobile gallery style” setting. Switch from “thumbnails” to “dots.” If your theme does not offer this, a 15-line JavaScript snippet can swap thumbnails for dots on screens under 768px.

Photo order: just drag and reorder images in your product editor.

Counter: add a small element beneath the gallery that updates with JavaScript. Your theme developer or a snippet from your help docs should cover this.

None of these tweaks require a plugin. None require a developer. They are layout and ordering decisions that change how shoppers interact with your existing photos.

The Bottom Line

Your product photos are only valuable if shoppers actually look at them. A gallery with 6 photos where shoppers only see 2 is effectively a 2-photo gallery. These thumbnail layout tweaks fix the navigation so the work you put into photography actually gets seen.

Start with tweak 1 and tweak 4. The horizontal row and the unusual second photo are the two changes that will have the biggest impact on how many photos shoppers click through. Then add the active state, the mobile dots, and the counter as polish.

Want more like this? Join MOKU Club for free.
