Over the weekend, OpenAI accidentally showed the world its next image model before launch. Three never-before-seen model names flickered into the company’s API for a few hours: aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha, and aurora-blue-alpha. They were pulled quickly, but by then they had already popped up somewhere else, quietly generating images in blind public tests.<\/p>\n
If you make product photos, social graphics or ad creative with ChatGPT, this is one leak worth knowing about. It usually means a new image engine is close.<\/p>\n
Late on Saturday, watchers caught three new model references in OpenAI’s API: aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha and aurora-blue-alpha. Within hours they were removed, which looked like an accidental rollout rather than a deliberate teaser.<\/p>\n
The trail did not go cold. The same three names turned up on Arena, a blind testing platform where people generate images from two anonymous models side by side and vote on the better one. That connected the dots: all three Aurora variants are image models, and OpenAI is testing them in public right now.<\/p>\n
An AI benchmarking team called Lumina managed to generate with two of them. The portrait pulled from aurora-red-alpha came back fast but slightly rough around the edges. aurora-green-alpha was slower, with a cleaner, more deliberate result. Blue has not surfaced in tests yet. Nobody outside OpenAI knows exactly how the three variants differ, and the working guess is that red, green and blue are checkpoint names for different builds of the same model.<\/p>\n
There is also a strong theory about what this becomes. OpenAI’s current image stack, ChatGPT Images 2.5, ships as two models: Flare for speed and Sunburst for precision. Earlier this year, three colour-named test variants of Image V2 ran through the same blind arena weeks before launch, then became the image model everyone uses today. Colour-coded alphas leaking early is basically OpenAI’s signature move before a big image release. The most likely reading: this is GPT-Image-3, and it may launch with speed and quality tiers, just like the last generation.<\/p>\n
None of this is official, so take it with a grain of salt. But here is why it is worth watching when you run a small business.<\/p>\n
Every jump in image generation is a jump in what you can make yourself. Clean product shots, seasonal banners, lifestyle backgrounds, ad variations, social posts. These are the jobs small teams used to hand to a designer or a photographer, and the tooling keeps eating more of that list. OpenAI is also wiring images directly into shopping, with virtual try-ons already running inside ChatGPT shopping. Better image models make all of that sharper.<\/p>\n
The speed-versus-quality split matters just as much. If the next release ships in tiers like the last one, you will likely get a fast model for churning out twenty social images in an afternoon and a quality model for the one hero shot that fronts your product page. Knowing which job to point at which model is the difference between content that looks homemade and content that looks expensive.<\/p>\n
And the timing lines up neatly. Whatever ships in the next few weeks will land right before the holiday season, when your marketing content has to work its hardest. The small businesses that know a new engine exists on day one are the ones testing it while everyone else reads about it a month later.<\/p>\n
The names will probably be different by launch day. The signal will not be. OpenAI’s next image engine is in testing, it will probably arrive in more than one flavour, and it is coming just in time for the season when your images have to work the hardest.<\/p>\n
