One 90-minute close-out tonight converts about forty decisions, notes, and open tabs into a single card for January, so the year does not greet you with a fog you have to wade through. Three copy-paste templates below, one decision now, and one line rule to keep it alive.

Template 1: The 40-line ledger

Open a note, set a 90-minute timer, and write until it rings. Not everything you did, just the things worth keeping. Under forty lines keeps it selective enough to write fast and short enough to reread.

THE YEAR LEDGER — [year]
Wins worth repeating:
1.
2.
3.
What actually moved money:
1.
2.
What quietly cost money:
1.
2.
What I am glad I stopped doing:
1.
Breaks and lessons nobody warned me about:
1.
2.

The ledger is your own evidence. Next year, when you are tempted to drop the thing that worked or revive the thing that cost, this page says otherwise.

Template 2: One card per open loop

Nobody actually closes a year. What closes is the list of things still open from it. Scan last year’s notes, messages, browser tabs, anything that says someone, including you, was waiting on an answer, and give each one a card.

Snooze until January 12:
Loop: [the promise, the application, the maybe-project, the unpaid invoice]
Status at break: [where exactly it stands]
Next action: [one sentence, one owner: me or them]

Two rules keep it honest. Anything that cannot name the action in one sentence goes to the maybe list instead. And each card goes to a calendar date in the new year, or it does not exist.

Template 3: January 2nd, first 30 minutes

The first real workday of the year usually starts with 200 unread emails and no plan. Write the plan now, while the year’s context is still in your head.

JAN 2, FIRST 30 MIN
Read: my Year Ledger (5 min)
Scan: loop cards due this week (5 min)
Pick: ONE needle-mover for the week (5 min)
Book: 2 focus blocks for it (5 min)
Send: 2 loop cards that need someone else's answer (10 min)

That is a whole January strategy written in December, and it takes effect before the first coffee of the new year.

The one decision: name your theme

Resolutions fade. Themes stick, because a theme is a direction, not a finish line. Write one line, a phrase like “faster answers”, “fewer, better projects”, or “sell to people who already bought”, and put it at the top of the ledger. Every January choice gets checked against the theme instead of against guilt.

Where the 90 minutes goes

Ledger first, 40 minutes. Loop cards second, 30. January card next, 10. Theme last, 10. Do it before things go quiet for the break, not after, because the whole point is that future-you opens the year with answers already written and the open loops already dated.

The year never really closes. It gets handed over, and a tidy handover is the difference between a calm start and a slow one.

Want more like this? Join MOKU Club for free.
