# Your Email Subject Lines Sound Like Everyone Else’s. Here’s the Fix.

You know the problem. You write a subject line, stare at it, and it reads like every other email sitting in your own inbox. “New arrivals you’ll love.” “Don’t miss this.” “Exclusive offer inside.” Boring. And your subscribers think so too, because they are not opening.

Here are five subject-line formulas that actually get opens, with the psychology behind each one and a template you can adapt right now.

## 1. The Specific Number

**Template:** “[Number] [units] of [thing] sold before we updated the site”

**Why it works:** Specificity creates credibility. “12 candle orders came in before noon” is more believable and more interesting than “Our candles are selling fast.”

**Your version:** “23 soap bars sold in the first hour” or “8 people already grabbed this bundle today”

## 2. The Embarrassing Admission

**Template:** “I [mistake or vulnerability]. Here’s what I learned.”

**Why it works:** Vulnerability breaks the fourth wall of marketing. It signals this is a real person, not a brand machine. Open rates spike when the sender sounds human.

**Your version:** “I priced our new collection wrong. Here’s what happened.” or “I forgot to send this email for three days.”

## 3. The Unfinished Sentence

**Template:** “The one thing I never [action] without…”

**Why it works:** An open loop triggers completion instinct. The brain hates an unfinished thought and will click to close it.

**Your version:** “The one product I never travel without…” or “The one tool I never launch a sale without…”

## 4. The Direct Contradiction

**Template:** “[Common advice] is wrong. Do this instead.”

**Why it works:** Pattern interruption. Your subscriber’s brain is on autopilot scanning subject lines. A direct challenge to conventional wisdom snaps them out of it.

**Your version:** “Posting every day is wrong. Do this instead.” or “Discount codes are killing your margin. Try this.”

## 5. The Time Pressure That Is Actually True

**Template:** “Gone in [specific timeframe]: [thing]”

**Why it works:** Time pressure works, but only when it is real. Fake urgency destroys trust. Use this only when there is an actual deadline.

**Your version:** “Gone in 48 hours: the ceramic batch” or “Midnight tonight: free shipping ends”

## Quick test before you send

Read your subject line out loud. If it sounds like something you would delete without reading, rewrite it. If it sounds like something your friend would text you, ship it.

The best subject lines are not clever. They are specific and honest. Start there.
