You Are Losing Money Every Time Someone Leaves Without Buying
The average e-commerce store loses nearly 70% of its carts at checkout. Email recovers some of that. SMS recovers more. And the businesses that combine both? They recover up to 3x more than email alone.
The problem is not that SMS does not work. The problem is that most businesses either never set it up, or set it up badly. A generic “You left something behind” text sent six hours later does nothing. A well-timed, well-written SMS sent at the right moment with the right tone? That converts.
Here is how to build an abandoned cart SMS sequence that actually works, without annoying your customers.
Step 1: Connect Your Store to an SMS Tool
If you are on Shopify, install an SMS app like SMSBump or Postscript. If you are on WooCommerce, use Klaviyo with its SMS add-on. The setup takes about 15 minutes.
Before you send a single text, make sure you have SMS opt-in set up properly. In most countries, you need explicit consent. Add a checkbox at checkout: “Get order updates and exclusive offers via SMS.” Make it unchecked by default unless you are already compliant with local regulations.
Do not skip this. Fines for unconsented SMS marketing start at $500 per message in the US.
Step 2: Write Your First Message (30 Minutes After Abandonment)
The first message should arrive 25 to 35 minutes after someone abandons their cart. Why? Because that is when they are most likely still thinking about the purchase.
Keep it short. Under 160 characters if possible. No links in the first message.
Example: “Hey, you left something behind! Your cart is waiting for you. Reply STOP to opt out.”
Tone matters here. You are not selling. You are reminding. Think of it like a shop assistant saying “Did you forget something?” as you walk toward the door. Helpful, not pushy.
Step 3: Add a Second Message With a Nudge (2 Hours Later)
If they did not come back from the first message, wait 2 hours and send something with a small incentive. This is where most businesses go wrong by offering too much too fast.
Start with a soft incentive, not a discount code.
Example: “Still thinking about it? We will hold your cart for 24 more hours. Tap here to finish checkout: [link]”
Only add a link now. The first message was a nudge. This one is a path. The shortlink should go directly to the cart page, pre-filled with their items. Not the homepage. Not a product page. The cart.
Step 4: Send a Final Message With a Real Offer (6 Hours Later)
If they still have not bought, send one last message with a time-limited discount. This is your closer.
Example: “Take 10% off your cart. Use code COMEBACK10 at checkout. Expires in 12 hours: [link]”
Make the discount real but small. Ten percent is enough. Twenty-five percent trains customers to wait for deals. Set the code to auto-apply if possible so they do not have to type anything.
After this third message, stop. Do not send a fourth. If three well-timed messages have not converted them, more will not help. They will just unsubscribe.
Step 5: Set Up the Timing Rules
Here is the full sequence timing:
- Message 1: 30 minutes after abandonment. Reminder only, no link.
- Message 2: 2 hours after abandonment. Cart link included.
- Message 3: 6 hours after abandonment. Discount code included.
Only send if the cart is still abandoned. If they completed the purchase, the sequence stops automatically. Most SMS tools handle this out of the box.
Step 6: Handle the Edge Cases
A few rules that keep this from backfiring:
- Do not SMS customers who already got an email. Pick one channel per abandonment event, or at minimum suppress the SMS if the email already converted.
- Do not send SMS at midnight. Set quiet hours. Most tools let you block sends between 9pm and 8am in the customer’s local time.
- Do not send to international numbers without checking compliance. SMS regulations vary wildly by country.
- Always include STOP opt-out language. Every single message.
What to Measure
Track these three numbers for every sequence:
- Recovery rate: What percentage of abandoned carts get recovered? Aim for 5 to 10%.
- Click-through rate: How many people tap the link? Aim for 15 to 25%.
- Unsubscribe rate: How many people opt out after receiving the sequence? Keep it under 1%.
If your unsubscribe rate is above 1%, your messages are too frequent or too salesy. Dial it back.
The Setup Takes 30 Minutes. The Returns Last Forever.
Most businesses never set up abandoned cart SMS because it feels complicated. It is not. Pick an app, write three messages, set the timing, and turn it on. The first week will tell you if the tone and timing are right. Adjust from there.
